Moussa Sissoko has been ruled out for three months in a bitter blow to Tottenham Hotspur, per the club’s official website.
What’s the word?
The France international sustained an injury to his medial collateral ligament in his right knee that required surgery against Southampton.
Sissoko was subsequently absent from the FA Cup tie against Middlesbrough and it has now been confirmed that he is not set to return to training until April.
The news comes as a bitter blow to Spurs boss Jose Mourinho, who is grappling with a number of injury issues.
Harry Kane is also currently out while The Daily Telegraph reports that Tanguy Ndombele is struggling for fitness, while Hugo Lloris, Ben Davies and Harry Winks could also be absent for this weekend’s clash with Liverpool.
The big fat Tottenham quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Spurs?
Investment needed
There is an obvious solution here.
The January transfer window is open and the club need to source a replacement for Sissoko quickly.
Admittedly, his profile is one that is not shared by many other players; his runs from deep and his ability to progress the ball quickly are unique.
But, more than anything, Spurs need options.
At this point, with their injury woes, any midfielder will do with a couple of weeks of the window still open.
Otherwise, Mourinho will be scraping the barrel simply to put a midfield together.
Chairman Daniel Levy needs to get on the phone, and put his hand in his pocket.
Meanwhile, Spurs are monitoring a striker in electric form.
